One-Minute Book Review

Stronger: How to build strength: the secret to a longer, healthier life – by David Vaux

First we’ll note that while the author is “Dr. David Vaux”, he is an osteopath, which means if he were American than he’d be a Doctor of Osteopathy—whereas in his native UK, the qualification is similar (5 years study and 1000 hours of patient-facing clinical training) but doesn’t yield a “doctor” title in the UK So, all this to say: he does know his stuff.

It’s also worth noting that prior to retraining as an osteopath, he previously served 15 years in the fire service on operational duties and as physical education officer. So again, he knows his stuff, and not just from behind a desk.

For those who like to be taken by the hand and led through things, you’ll enjoy his step-by-step approach, first teaching 10 key foundational strength exercises that have been billed as “the only 10 exercises you’ll ever need”, and then putting them together with progressions in a 12-week program.

The style is very light pop-science, motivational and energetic, with just enough science to ensure the reader understands why each thing is important and how it works.

Bottom line: if you’d like to get stronger as you get older rather than weaker, and don’t like to complicate things beyond necessity, then this is absolutely the book for you.
