Or happy birthday to Clara Barton (born: 1821), who, amongst other important contributions to the field of humanitarianism and nursing, founded the American Red Cross after learning about the original Red Cross in 1869 in Switzerland, and petitioned for the United States to set up an American branch. The US wasn’t keen (the President at the time, Hayes, considered it was unnecessary, as such calamities only affected other countries), and it took her consistent campaigning from 1873–1881 to eventually get it founded.
Here’s to her dogged determination in caring for human life!
